How To Protect Your Home From Wind Damage

Wind damage can lead to roof repairs or even roof replacement. Unfortunately, there is no way to control the force of wind. But, there are a few steps you can take to try and prevent any wind damage to your roof.

Here are some tips on how to protect your home.

Know Vulnerable Areas

If you know that there are going to be strong winds, check the exterior and interior of your home for vulnerable spots. Usually, your shingles and gutters are most prone to damage. Look for any curling shingles or loose gutters. This way, you know what needs to be reinforced and what to look at once the winds calm down.

Trim Trees

Any branches or trees that are close to your roof can be a threat. It is very easy for strong winds to blow trees or branches into your roof, causing damage. Take some time to trim any hanging branches or cut down trees that could pose a threat to your roof. If trees are a safe distance from your roof, then your roof should be safe from any damage.

Check Roof Installations

You may have a chimney, roof-mounted HVAC systems, or vents that are mounted on your roof or eaves. Make sure you check that these are all secure before strong winds occur. You can have these checked during a roof inspection to be safe. If anything is loose or not secure, make sure you get it replaced to prevent and future issues.

Secure Outdoor Items

Strong winds can lift patio furniture, BBQs, garbage bins or any sports equipment around your home. If the winds are strong enough, they can blow these into your roof and cause damage. Make sure all your outdoor items are secure so you do not risk them blowing into your roof or your homes exterior.
