Like any other home improvement service, it pays to get a variety of quotes, and you should never choose the lowest quote, especially if it seems too good to be true.

1. Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) – The BBB serving the Ottawa area will have a list of roofing contractors that you know are legitimate businesses. 
2. Check Their Address – Even if their address is in Ottawa or the surrounding area, double-check. Many illegitimate operators will use any address to make their business look real. But they aren’t actually located at the address and you have no way of knowing where to find them if you have a problem with your roof. 
3.  Check Insurance and Registration – Professional roofing companies should be able to show you certificates of insurance covering you, your property and their business for any damages that happen during your new roof installation. They should also be registered with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB).  
4. Listen to Your Instincts – If anything sounds too good, especially compared to what you’ve heard from other roofers, or if a company asks for a large down payment,  or if anything else doesn’t seem right, do your research. In the end, it’s your home and your money. Protect them!
