Can The Sun Create Roof Damage?

Your roof can be damaged due to many different reasons. One of which is the sun. Damage from the sun tends to be overlooked considering winter damage is more common.

Let’s talk about how the sun can damage your roof.

Coating Damage

Certain roofing materials require protective coating. If these materials receive too much sun exposure, then they can become dry and brittle. You may find that cracks form or your shingles can even fall off. If your shingles cracks, then your roof is at higher risk of other damage from water or impact.

Bleaching

Some roofs that are a dark colour can become bleached over time due to sun exposure. Your roof may have patches of lighter colours or even turn completely white. While this does not damage the structure of your roof, it can make the appearance of your roof unappealing.

Thermal Shock

Your roof, especially if it is made from metal, can suffer from extreme heat. The heat can change the metal’s temperature, which can cause it to thin out and crack. If the metal cracks, then moisture can enter and create moss growth or roof leaks. You may need to replace your roof sooner than expected if your roof has moss growth or leaks.

Asphalt Damage

Asphalt shingles are very prone to damage due to the sun’s radiation. Extreme heat can cause the asphalt to wear out and deteriorate. If you live in an area prone to extreme heat, it is recommended to not use asphalt.

Aging

Considering the heat can wear out your roof and cause damage, it can result in your roof aging much quicker. You may have to replace shingles, fix any discolouration, or even replace the whole roof.
