4 Reasons Why Summer Is A Good Time for Chimney Repairs

So when’s the last time you had a chimney repair?  If you’re like the vast majority of homeowners, you’ve probably never had to repair your chimney, and that’s a good thing.

But, considering the potentially serious consequences of a weakened chimney, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your chimney for signs of wear and tear.

Why You Should Get Chimney Repairs Done in the Summer

First, you should never try to repair a chimney yourself. In addition to needing to work on a sloped roof, fixing a chimney may involve working at extreme heights on a ladder. If there’s a home maintenance project that should be done by a roofing contractor or chimney service and repair specialist, this is it.

  1. Best time for Masonry Repair & Tuck Pointing – Missing mortar between the bricks of your chimney is the number one reason for repairing a chimney. Summer’s warmer temperatures allow the materials used in masonry repair to properly cure.
  2. You’re Not Using Your Fireplace as Much – Whether you’re just doing routine maintenance, like a chimney cleaning, or a major repair, like a chimney relining, you won’t be able to use your chimney while the work is being done. So it’s less of an imposition on you to do the work in summer.
  3. Chimneys Must Be Waterproofed – To prevent moisture from seeping into the masonry and compromising its integrity, your chimney and any repair done to it must be coated with waterproofing masonry sealant.

Multiple applications of sealant are required to properly waterproof the masonry, which is especially important for your chimney. The sealant actually penetrates the top layer of the masonry. Again, the warmer temperatures in the summer allow the sealant to better penetrate the masonry and for the masonry to properly cure afterwards.
  4. The Time Needed for Chimney Repairs – Major repairs, including rebuilding the chimney, can take a long time to complete. Starting the job at the beginning or middle of summer is key to ensuring that workers have enough time to complete the project before colder temperatures set in.
