3 Signs You Need A New Roof

There’s probably no part of your house that is more important, but that you pay less attention to than your roof. Unfortunately, that means you might not realize you need a new roof until there’s water dripping from the ceiling.

The good news is, if you start giving your asphalt shingle roof just a little bit of attention, you can learn to spot many of the signs that you might need a new roof installed before water leaks in and damages your home.

Look for These Signs that You Need a New Roof

Another benefit of learning to spot the signs that it might be time to replace your roof is you can get the job done without the pressure of doing so in an emergency situation.

  1. The Age of Your Roof – You might be familiar with terms like “20-year shingles”, which is a warranty rating that roofing materials manufacturers place on their products. But it doesn’t mean your roof will be trouble-free for 20 years.

If your roof is over 10 years old, problems could start happening at any time, especially if there are other signs of needing a new roof.
  2. The Condition of the Existing Shingles – Of course, if your roof shingles are showing signs of wear, that might be a clear sign that you need a new roof. Also look for shingles that are missing, cracked, cup-shaped, curled in the corners, or that have their protective top layer of granules worn away.

If only a few shingles are showing signs of wear, you can probably get away with a roof repair to replace them. But, if you spot signs all across your roof, it’s probably time to call a roofing contractor.
  3. Check Your Attic – In your attic, you can see the bottom of your roof deck and it can tell you a lot about the condition of your roof. If you see any points of light coming in through the roof, signs of mould, or dampness on the roof structure or insulation, they could be signs of a roof leak that hasn’t become a big problem yet. But it will if you don’t do something about it.
